Spain hospitality energy-efficiency grant rollout

Overview

In July 2026, the Spanish government expanded its energy-efficiency push for the hospitality sector with a €15 million grant programme. The “Plan de Choque” offers businesses such as bars, cafés, restaurants, hotels, and guesthouses grants of €5,000–€11,000, covering up to 100% of eligible costs for replacing ageing equipment with high-efficiency alternatives. The scheme is available to more than 300,000 hospitality businesses nationwide but excludes equipment that relies on fossil-fuel energy sources, such as natural gas.

Under Royal Decree 638/2026, the fund aims to reduce energy consumption by facilitating the replacement of appliances, industrial machinery, and air-conditioning units. Applications opened at 10 am on 5 August 2026 and close at 3 pm on 30 September 2026, with awards made on a first-come, first-served basis until the budget is exhausted.

This initiative follows an earlier €5 million tender announced by Congress in early July 2026 to upgrade air-conditioning units. It is part of a broader national effort to improve energy performance, alongside larger-scale programs like the PREE, which utilizes European Union recovery funds to target the energy rehabilitation of public buildings, schools, and hospitals.
