Spain launches enriched‑environment trial to boost stroke recovery

Researchers at Hospital del Mar in Barcelona have started the RehArt clinical trial to test whether an enriched environment – including social, musical and leisure activities – can accelerate recovery after a stroke. The study will involve about 90 patients with moderate to severe strokes, who will be randomly assigned to conventional rehabilitation alone, conventional rehab plus group sessions in the enriched space, or individualized activities in their rooms. Outcomes such as functional ability, motor skills, cognition, emotion and quality of life will be evaluated.

At the same time, the Fundación Freno al Ictus highlighted the long‑term challenges faced by stroke survivors and their families, noting that the condition remains a leading cause of disability and death in Spain, affecting more than 120,000 people each year. The foundation announced a new podcast and newsletter to provide information and support for patients, emphasizing the need for greater social awareness of both visible and invisible post‑stroke impairments.
