Spain gears up for total solar eclipse on Aug 12 2026

A total solar eclipse will cross Spain on 12 August 2026, the first such event visible from the Iberian Peninsula since 1905. The path of totality runs west‑to‑east across the country, including Galicia, Castilla‑León, La Rioja, Aragón, Valencia, the Balearic Islands and several northern and central provinces. Public authorities and scientific organisations are organising widespread activities: free distribution of ISO‑approved eclipse glasses in Valencia, safety campaigns by the municipal civil‑protection service, workshops in Rioja and Binéfar, planetarium shows at the Parque de las Ciencias and the Ciutat de les Arts, and observation sessions in Valencia’s Umbracle and in the municipal cultural centre of Binéfar. The Council of Agricultural Engineers warned rural visitors to respect farmland and fire‑risk rules. Tourism interest has surged, with Kayak reporting a near‑doubling of flight searches to northern Spanish airports and rural accommodation in Madrid’s Sierra Norte filling up. The eclipse is also promoted as a catalyst for balanced tourism, drawing visitors from across Europe and beyond to Spain’s historic and natural sites.
