Spain launches railway gauge conversion and highway upgrade projects

Spain's Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has tendered a €7.9 million contract to advance the change of railway gauge on the Mediterranean Corridor between Castellón, Vinaròs and La Boella. The work, covering about 450 kilometres of track, includes technical assistance and material supply to adapt the line from Iberian to standard European gauge, preparing stations, signaling, catenary and other infrastructure for the eventual physical conversion.

The ministry also issued a €3.2 million contract for the design and construction of a new 12.3‑kilometre stretch of the A‑58 autovía linking Bótoa and La Roca de la Sierra on the Badajoz‑Cáceres route. The project, budgeted at €93.6 million, aims to replace the existing N‑523 with a high‑capacity highway, improving traffic flow and safety between the two provincial capitals.
