Spain leads coordination of European Defence Fund military projects

Spain has emerged as a leading coordinator for military projects within the European Defence Fund (EDF). According to a report by the Centre Delàs d'Estudis per la Pau, Spain is among the four nations—alongside France, Italy, and Germany—that coordinated 63% of EDF projects in 2023 and are projected to coordinate 72% in 2025.

Spanish company Indra is identified as one of the top six companies coordinating EDF projects, alongside major players such as Airbus, Thales, and Leonardo. The EDF provides approximately 1 billion euros in annual subsidies as part of a broader EU rearmament plan aimed at strengthening production and deterring Russian aggression.

In addition to European funds, the Spanish government is implementing its own rearmament policy. To meet NATO's 2% GDP spending commitment, Spain has approved 41 new Special Modernization Programs for 2025, valued at 33.315 billion euros. This trend is driving regional industrial interest, with business forums in areas like Burgos and Catalonia seeking to integrate local companies into international defense value chains.
