Spain defense capability and coordination expansion
Overview
Spain is increasing its military capabilities through both European Union funding and national rearmament policies. The European Commission granted Spain a 1,000 million euro loan via the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument to enhance military readiness and strengthen the Mediterranean flank.
Simultaneously, Spain has established itself as a key coordinator for military projects within the European Defence Fund (EDF). Alongside France, Italy, and Germany, Spain is projected to coordinate 72% of EDF projects in 2025. The Spanish company Indra is noted as one of the top six companies coordinating these projects.
To meet NATO’s 2% GDP spending commitment, the Spanish government has also approved 41 new Special Modernization Programs for 2025, valued at 33.315 billion euros, driving regional industrial interest in defense value chains.
