Spain Lifts Evacuation Orders as Wildfire Containment Improves

Spanish authorities lifted evacuation orders for 13 municipalities at 17:00 on Tuesday, allowing residents to return home after a severe wildfire season. Roughly 63,000 people were evacuated and about 35,000 remain confined, while nearly 100,000 have been affected across Castile and León, the Community of Madrid and Castile‑La Mancha.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said Spain is beginning to see “light at the end of the tunnel” but warned a forecast heatwave will raise fire‑fighting risks. Interior Minister Fernando Grande‑Marlaska described recent nighttime operations as “reasonably positive”. The fires have burned an estimated 770,000 hectares and caused at least one death in the Valencia region.

In villages such as Navas del Rey, some homes escaped major damage while others were completely destroyed, illustrating the uneven impact of the blazes as residents begin to rebuild.
