Spain mandates microchip ID for cats amid growing appreciation of pets

A 2023 amendment to Spain's Animal Welfare Law now requires all domestic cats to be microchipped, creating a permanent electronic ID to help locate lost animals, curb illegal breeding and reduce abandonment. The law applies nationwide, with each autonomous community managing its own registration system and imposing fines for non‑compliance.

Pet owners increasingly recognize the emotional benefits of companion animals. Studies cited show that dogs and cats can lower stress, reduce anxiety, and improve cardiovascular health by releasing oxytocin and lowering cortisol levels. Owners also report that pets provide silent companionship during difficult times, contributing to overall wellbeing.
