Spain mandates 12% olive oil production storage to stabilize market

The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has ordered olive oil mills to mandatorily store 12% of their declared production for the 2026/2027 campaign. This measure, published in the Official State Gazette, aims to prevent market distortions and price collapses caused by an expected surplus.

The decision follows forecasts of a highly abundant harvest, estimated at 1,602,596 tonnes, a 23% increase from the previous year. Combined with initial stocks of 357,040 tonnes, the total volume exceeds the regulatory threshold of 120% of the average production from the last six campaigns.

The mandatory withdrawal, totaling approximately 188,000 tonnes, will apply to production declared monthly starting in November 2026. The stored oil must remain out of the market until September 30, 2027. Producers may use their own facilities or third-party storage. While the measure is intended to protect farmer profitability and market stability, the government of the Balearic Islands has expressed opposition, preparing a legal appeal on behalf of local small-scale producers.
