Spain observes moments of silence following fatal train collision
Spain has observed moments of silence across various municipalities to honor the victims of a major railway accident. The tragedy involved a collision between an AVE train carrying 378 passengers and an Iryo train carrying 147 passengers, causing several carriages to fall down an embankment.
Provisional reports indicate at least 68 deaths and over one hundred injuries. While 56 individuals have been discharged, 53 remain hospitalized. The Federation of Spanish Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) requested that local governments hold these tributes, which took place in cities including Madrid, Seville, and Santiago de Compostela.
Emergency services, including the Civil Guard, have utilized heavy machinery and thermal sensor drones to search for victims. A judge has restricted access to the site to preserve evidence for the ongoing investigation. In La Laguna, the eleventh edition of the Taburiente Awards also included a moment of silence for the victims.
