Spain pension increases and social security changes set for 2027
Spanish pensions are set to increase on January 1, 2027, based on the average inflation rate (CPI) recorded between December 2025 and November 2026. While the exact percentage remains unconfirmed, current data through August 2026 suggests an estimated increase of approximately 3.16%, based on available year-on-year inflation figures.
Simultaneously, workers in Spain will see a reduction in net pay due to an increase in the Intergenerational Equity Mechanism (MEI). This additional social security contribution, designed to bolster the pension reserve fund in anticipation of the baby boom generation's retirement, is scheduled to rise to 1% in 2027. This mechanism aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Social Security system by collecting targeted contributions from employees and self-employed individuals.
