Spain pension reforms and retirement requirements to shift by 2027

The Spanish public pension system is approaching a structural turning point in 2027, marking the end of a transitional period initiated by legislative reforms in 2013. According to Alfonso Muñoz, a Social Security official, the changes will redefine retirement ages, calculation methods, and contribution requirements.

Under the new framework, the ordinary retirement age will follow two distinct paths. Workers seeking to retire at 65 must demonstrate a contribution history of at least 38 years and six months. Those with shorter career histories will be required to postpone retirement until age 67. Additionally, to receive 100% of the regulatory base, workers must now complete 37 years of contributions, an increase from the previous requirement of 36 years and six months.

The calculation of the regulatory base is also evolving. Alongside the traditional method using the last 25 years of contributions, a new alternative covering the last 308 months is being implemented to determine pension amounts.
