Spain pet product purchases increase by 21%
Pet product purchases in Spain have increased by 21% during the first eight months of 2026 compared to the same period the previous year, according to data from the financial platform Klarna. This growth reflects a cultural shift where pets are increasingly viewed as family members. There are currently more than 28 million pets in Spain, with nearly half of all households living with one.
Average spending per pet in Spain has risen by 28% over the last five years. This trend is largely driven by younger demographics; a study by EAE Business School indicates that 45% of Generation Z and 40% of millennials in Spain consider their pets to be the most important thing in their lives.
Data also shows a seasonal peak in pet-related shopping during January. This is attributed to the influx of new pets following the holiday season—with the Real Sociedad Canina de España noting that 16.2% of dog adoptions occur during the Christmas period—and the winter sales season.
