Spain plans relocation of 500 migrant girls from Ceuta

The Spanish government is preparing an emergency plan to relocate approximately 500 migrant girls from the North African enclave of Ceuta to mainland Spain. This initiative follows a mass influx of migrants in late July. The Ministry of Youth and Childhood is coordinating the plan with local Ceuta authorities to address the humanitarian situation, where hundreds of unaccompanied minors have been living in precarious conditions.

To expedite the process and avoid political friction with regional governments, the plan explores a mechanism where child protection organizations provide care in mainland resources without requiring the transfer of legal guardianship to autonomous communities. This approach aims to protect the most vulnerable profiles, particularly girls, while maintaining administrative efficiency.

While the Ministry works on this relocation, Ceuta is establishing six provisional locations, including warehouses and residential buildings, to house minors during the transition. The move comes amid conflicting stances: the European Commission has stated that EU law allows for the return of irregular migrants, including unaccompanied minors, to their country of origin. Meanwhile, political opposition in Spain has called for the return of migrants to Morocco rather than relocation to the mainland.
