Spain's Health Secretary Padilla backs infectious disease specialty

Javier Padilla, Spain’s Secretary of State for Health, said the country is “one of the places where companies can set up, both to research and to produce and commercialise” biotech products. He highlighted recent reforms that make pharmaceutical policy a national strategy, noting Spain’s leading role in European clinical trials and faster funding for medicines.

In a meeting with the Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (SEIMC), Padilla reaffirmed the Ministry’s “firm commitment” to create a dedicated specialty in Infectious Diseases within the current legislative term. The society presented documentation showing that the proposal is supported by 91 % of infectious‑disease doctors in Spain and urged that the process be completed as soon as possible.

Both statements underline the government’s aim to strengthen Spain’s biomedical sector and ensure specialist training keeps pace with emerging health challenges.
