Spain prepares for August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse as locals plan viewing sites

A total solar eclipse will cross the Iberian Peninsula on August 12, 2026, the first such event visible from Spain since 1912. Surveys show the highest concentrations of viewers will be in Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona, La Coruña and Asturias, with smaller shares planning to travel to regions such as Alicante, the Balearic Islands, Cádiz, León and Pontevedra.

Meteorologist Mar Gómez warned that reliable weather forecasts for the eclipse will only be available a week before the event, and that August storms could cloud viewing in many parts of the country. The eclipse will be total across several autonomous communities, including Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla‑La León, Aragón, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands.

Experts note that the sudden darkness may trigger noticeable responses in wildlife, with birds, insects and farm animals reacting as if night had fallen. About 72% of Spaniards are aware of the upcoming eclipse, and most intend to stay in their usual residences or travel by private vehicle to optimal viewing locations.
