Spain prepares for major solar eclipse in 2027
Spain is set to experience a significant solar eclipse on August 2, 2027. This event follows the total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026, marking a period of intense astronomical activity for the Iberian Peninsula. The 2027 eclipse will be unique as Spain will be the only European country to witness totality, with the shadow covering a strip from Cádiz to Almería, as well as Ceuta and Melilla.
The 2027 eclipse is expected to be one of the longest of the 21st century, with totality reaching 6 minutes and 23 seconds near Luxor, Egypt. This duration is due to the Earth being near aphelion and the Moon being near perigee. The shadow will travel from the Atlantic Ocean across the Strait of Gibraltar, through North Africa, and into Egypt.
In A Coruña, HI Coruña is organizing a discussion titled ‘Érase una red’ on September 24 to reflect on the impact of the August 12 eclipse. Using Samantha Harvey’s novel ‘Orbital’ as a starting point, the session will explore the scientific, cultural, and touristic implications of such astronomical phenomena on the city and its inhabitants.
