Ceuta migration crisis triggers debate over minor distribution

Spain is facing a significant migration crisis in Ceuta following a mass influx of approximately 80,000 people from Morocco on July 30 and 31. Among those arriving are over 1,000 unaccompanied minors, prompting the Spanish government to prioritize family reunification and call for the deployment of all available reception processes.

The Ministry of Youth and Childhood, led by Sira Rego, has convened a Sectoral Commission on Childhood and Adolescence for August 13 to address the distribution of these minors across Spanish regions. The meeting will also discuss an extraordinary 25 million euro credit allocated to manage the emergency in Ceuta.

Political tensions have emerged regarding the meeting. While regional governments led solely by the Partido Popular (PP), such as Andalusia, Galicia, and Madrid, have confirmed their attendance to fulfill institutional responsibilities, they intend to criticize the central government's management. In contrast, regional governments in which the PP governs in coalition with Vox—specifically Aragón, Extremadura, and Castilla y León—have announced they will boycott the commission.

In Catalonia, Junts spokesperson Miriam Nogueras has requested that the region be excluded from the distribution of minors, citing a heavily strained regional social services system. Additionally, the organization “Matqiish Waldi” has called for urgent protection for minors in Ceuta, highlighting risks of exploitation and alleging instances of sexual assault.
