Spain prolongs major highway tunnel works and launches railway line renovation, raising travel delays

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility announced that the modernization of several tunnels on the Atlantic highway (A‑8) and the Oviedo‑Villaviciosa route (A‑64) in Asturias will be extended throughout the summer months. Weekday lane closures will run from 08:00 to 13:00, with night‑time work on other tunnels, as part of a €33.9 million program to upgrade CCTV, automatic incident detection, ventilation, lighting and fire‑protection systems.

Separately, the railway infrastructure manager ADIF has begun a comprehensive upgrade of the 69‑kilometre Ronda‑Bobadilla line in Andalusia. The work includes installing a third track, complete electrification, new substations, tunnel clearance works and stabilisation of slopes. Train services are suspended for the expected 13‑month duration, while additional repairs are being carried out on damage caused by recent storms.
