Spain prosecutor Diego Villafañe accused of influencing Leire Díez case

Diego Villafañe, a former teniente fiscal of the Ministry of Justice, is alleged to have ordered the closure of the investigation into Leire Díez, a PSOE plumber, by urging the Badajoz chief prosecutor to dismiss the case on grounds of territorial competence. The request led to the case being transferred to Madrid, where Judge Santiago Pedraz took over. Villafañe is set to testify before Pedraz about his contacts with Díez and lawyer Jacobo Teijelo.

Villafañe also told his former superior, Álvaro García Ortiz, about two brief meetings – one of ten minutes and another of fifteen – with Díez and Teijelo, describing them as routine discussions with an attorney. Sources say the meetings covered unrelated procedural matters, though Villafañe mentioned the name of another prosecutor, José Grinda, as a possible target of the alleged scheme.
