Spain's public debt hits record 1.76 trillion euros FAST-MOVING

Spain's public debt reached a record high of 1.763 trillion euros in June 2026, according to the Banco de España. This represents a 4.2% increase compared to the same month in 2025. While the debt-to-GDP ratio decreased slightly to 101.5% from 103.4% a year prior, the absolute figure remains a historic peak. The state debt specifically rose 4.4% to 1.602 trillion euros, while Social Security debt increased by 7.9% to 136 billion euros.

In the trade sector, Spanish exports showed resilience, reaching 201.134 billion euros in the first half of 2026, a 2% increase from the previous year. June saw a record monthly export value of 35.545 billion euros, driven largely by a 49.9% surge in energy exports. However, imports also rose, contributing to a trade deficit of 32.781 billion euros for the first half of the year.

Globally, the United States reported its federal debt surpassing 40 trillion dollars for the first time, a figure that has doubled since 2017. Meanwhile, Japan recorded its third consecutive month of trade deficit in July, with a deficit of 634.5 billion yen, primarily due to rising costs for energy imports like crude oil.
