Spain ramps up battery storage with multi‑billion projects

Spain is experiencing a rapid expansion of battery‑storage capacity as public funds and private capital converge on projects nationwide. Statkraft received the first utility‑scale BESS in Tudela, Navarra – 14.26 MW and 28.51 MWh – funded with a €4 million investment and Next Generation EU support, and it is pursuing more than 200 MW of hybrid schemes across Galicia, Andalusia, Extremadura and other regions. In the Canary Islands, the Arico plant combines an 8 MW solar field with an 8 MWh battery system, financed with €2 million of EU funds.

Sungrow Renewables is leading three large installations in Castellón, totalling €150 million and about 700 MWh – enough to back roughly 100 000 homes and generate close to €1 million in municipal taxes each year. Meanwhile, Grenergy secured a €100 million financing package from Santander and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation to build a 618 MWh “stand‑alone” battery park in Uviéu, Asturias, slated for operation in the first half of 2027. The CEO of Grenergy highlighted the projects as critical for flexibly storing solar excess and reducing gas use during peak hours.
