Spain renewable generation and storage expansion

In early July 2026, Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition announced that new renewable generation contests would be launched in September‑October, the first call of this kind since 2022. The contests aim to unlock existing grid connections for on‑shore wind, solar and pumped‑hydro storage projects, with speculation about a forthcoming offshore wind tender before year‑end.

By late July, the policy drive had translated into concrete battery‑storage projects across the country. Public funds and EU support enabled the first utility‑scale battery system in Tudela and a series of hybrid schemes in Galicia, Andalusia, Extremadura and other regions. Large‑scale installations led by Sungrow Renewables and Grenergy received multi‑hundred‑million‑euro financing, targeting hundreds of megawatts of storage capacity to balance solar excess and curb gas‑fired generation.
