Spain ramps up fire watch as wildfires flare in Vigo and Tardelcuende
The daily fire risk index in the mountains surrounding Vigo has risen to very high and even extreme levels, prompting local forest communities to increase surveillance and launch a prevention campaign. Officials warned that the situation “looks quite bad.”
In the municipality of Tardelcuende, a forest fire was declared on the afternoon of July 1. The incident was classified as Level 1, indicating a potential threat to large forest areas and nearby infrastructure. Wind‑driven flames prompted the deployment of 19 emergency units and 98 personnel, including ground crews, water tankers, and helicopters. Authorities expect the fire’s intensity to diminish after 20:00 as winds subside.
