Spain ranks among top European nations for retirees' income and wellbeing
Latest OECD data show that people aged 65 and over in Spain have a disposable income equal to 96.7% of the average population, placing the country among the highest in Europe and ahead of several northern economies. The high replacement rate of earnings and the strong public pension system keep retirees’ living standards close to their pre‑retirement income, although experts warn that this may decline by 2050.
In the Valencian Community, seniors are increasingly active and affluent, travelling, exercising, and embracing digital tools, while facing varied pension levels. Policymakers stress the need for age‑friendly urban design, social programmes to combat loneliness, and measures to maintain the sustainability of the pension system as life expectancy rises.
