Spain reaches record renewable energy production driven by solar

Spain has reached historic milestones in renewable energy production, driven largely by the rapid expansion of solar photovoltaic technology. In July 2026, renewable sources generated 14,699 GWh, accounting for 54.1% of the country's total electricity production. Solar photovoltaic energy was the primary contributor, producing 7,696 GWh and representing approximately 28% of the national electricity mix.

Despite these records, the rapid deployment of solar power has introduced significant challenges regarding grid infrastructure, energy storage, and demand management. Limitations in the network and storage capacity mean that a portion of the clean electricity produced cannot always be utilized, leading to wasted energy during peak sunlight hours.

To address the need for flexibility and stability when photovoltaic production decreases, technologies such as concentrated solar power (CSP) are becoming increasingly strategic due to their ability to store heat and generate electricity during the night. Currently, the energy market remains influenced by gas prices, highlighting that the energy transition depends not only on installation capacity but also on the ability to manage and store electricity effectively.
