Spain readies safe viewing for August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse
A total solar eclipse will occur on 12 August 2026, with the path of totality crossing northern Spain, including Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Castile‑León and the Balearic Islands. Outside the totality band the eclipse will be partial across the rest of the country and parts of England, France, Morocco and Italy. Direct observation can cause severe retinal damage, so experts urge the use of certified eclipse glasses that meet CE marking and ISO 12312‑2 standards. A study by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía found lenses produced up to 2025 remain safe for the upcoming eclipses, although many non‑certified products are on the market.
In the town of Arguedas, Navarre, the municipality has begun preparations for an organized viewing event. About 2,000 visitors are expected, and a detailed operational plan will be presented on 15 May. Measures include designated observation sites, safety supervision, and sustainable facilities to ensure a secure and accessible experience. Authorities also recommend indirect viewing techniques, such as pinhole projection, as additional safe alternatives.
