European Union grants Spain 1,000 million euro defense loan
The European Commission has granted Spain a 1,000 million euro loan to expand its defense capabilities and military readiness. Announced by European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius, the funding is provided through the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument.
This initiative aims to strengthen the European Union’s Mediterranean flank, providing a more secure southern region. The long-term, low-interest loans follow a rigorous evaluation of national defense investment plans and are intended to help member states urgently acquire modern military equipment.
While Spain requested and received the full 1,000 million euros, it ranks among the countries with lower relative allocations in this initial round of the fund, alongside Finland. Other participating nations in this first package of loans include Greece and Denmark.
