Spain records 1,108 heat-related deaths in early August

Spain has recorded 1,108 deaths attributable to extreme heat during the first half of August, according to estimates from the Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo). This figure represents a 15% increase compared to the same period in 2025, marking the third-highest mortality rate for this timeframe since the system's inception in 2015.

Demographic data shows that the heatwave has disproportionately affected the elderly, with approximately 97% of the victims being over the age of 65. Among these, 659 individuals were older than 85. The mortality rate also shows a gender disparity, with 670 women and 438 men recorded as deceased.

Regional distribution varies significantly. Catalonia reported the highest number of heat-related deaths with 575, followed by Andalusia with 105 and the Canary Islands with 75. In the Valencian Community, 64 deaths were estimated, including 28 in the province of Alicante. Meanwhile, Galicia and the Community of Madrid each recorded 31 deaths. Since the activation of the 2026 Heat Plan, the cumulative total of heat-related deaths in Spain has reached 4,191.
