Spain’s MoMo system recorded 2,026 heat‑related deaths in July 2026, nearly double the 1,060 deaths in July 2025 and the second‑highest July total since the system began in 2015, after the 2,217 deaths in July 2022. The toll was led by Catalonia (544 deaths), followed by Andalusia (262), the Valencian Community (235), the Basque Country (140) and Castilla‑La Mancha (84). Elderly victims dominated the count: 1,944 were over 65, including 1,249 over 85, and women accounted for 1,208 deaths. The summer saw four heat waves with temperatures exceeding 40 °C and isolated peaks of 45 °C. Health officials warned that each degree above the health‑risk threshold raises mortality by roughly 9‑11 %, aggravating cardiovascular, respiratory and renal conditions. Cumulatively, 3,158 heat‑related deaths have been recorded since the Heat Plan 2026 was launched, adding 101 deaths in May and 1,031 in June.
