Spain records 301,101 hectares burned in 2026 wildfires

Spain has recorded 301,101 hectares burned from the beginning of 2026 through September 30, according to the Copernicus European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS). This figure represents 43.6% of the total area burned across the European Union, which has seen 690,375 hectares lost to fires so far this year.

In the autonomous community of Galicia, approximately 4,000 hectares have burned during the year. Notable incidents include a 750-hectare fire in Ponteareas in April and a 460-hectare fire in Calvos de Randim in Ourense, which required preventive emergency measures due to its proximity to residential areas.

Nationally, Spain has experienced 462 fires, placing it behind Italy in total burned area but ahead of France. The most severe period of fire activity occurred in July, when the country had already recorded 50,750 hectares burned, more than double the amount recorded by the same date in 2025.
