Spain regional governments announce wildfire recovery funds

Regional governments in Spain have announced significant financial packages to address the aftermath of devastating wildfire seasons.

In Extremadura, the regional government is allocating 250,000 euros in direct aid to tourism businesses in Las Hurdes affected by August fires. Compensations, ranging from 1,200 to 7,500 euros, will target rural accommodations, hotels, and restaurants. To minimize bureaucracy, the administration plans to identify beneficiaries using existing data, granting aid automatically unless a business renounces it. Additionally, preferential financing is being offered to small and medium enterprises to ensure business continuity.

In Aragon, President Jorge Azcón announced a 51-million-euro plan following a record-breaking summer where over 35,200 hectares burned. The plan includes 8.6 million euros for direct aid and infrastructure repair—specifically for farmers, small businesses, and public works—and 42 million euros to bolster firefighting capabilities. This investment covers the purchase of heavy helicopters, amphibious aircraft, and firefighting vehicles, as well as a 30% increase in firefighting personnel.
