Spain: Regional governments reduce LGTBIQ+ funding and legislation
In Spain, regional governments led by conservative coalitions are implementing measures that reduce or omit specific protections and funding for the LGTBIQ+ community.
In Aragón, the regional government has eliminated a specific line of subsidies previously dedicated to LGTBIQ+ projects and their families. The previous allocation of 161,000 euros has been removed, with the total budget for the current call for subsidies reduced by 15.5%. The remaining funds will be redirected toward initiatives for people with disabilities and universal accessibility. Vox representatives defended the move, stating that sexual orientation is not a valid reason for public subsidies and that LGTBIQ+ individuals do not fall under the category of disability.
Meanwhile, Castilla y León has become the only Spanish autonomous community without its own LGTBI law. While neighboring Asturias has approved its own regulations, the administration in Castilla y León, led by the Partido Popular (PP) and Vox, has not advanced regional legislation. LGTBI associations have criticized the PP for stalling efforts despite the existence of state-level protections, noting a lack of specific public policies for the collective in the region.
