Pazo de Meirás registered to Spanish State, Franco family moves 400 items

A court order from the First Instance Court No. 1 in A Coruña instructed the Betanzos Property Registry to inscribe the Pazo de Meirás in the name of the Spanish State and to cancel all contradictory registry entries. The decision follows the Spanish Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling that the estate, which includes 15 farms and associated buildings in Sada, belongs to the State and was never lawfully owned by the Franco descendants.

In parallel, the Franco family has begun removing more than 400 pieces of furniture, decorative objects and other belongings from the palace. A transport company from Alcorcón is packing the items; part of the collection is expected to be auctioned in Madrid from September. The Spanish Government has ordered the suspension of public visits to the Pazo during the removal. The Commission for the Recovery of Historical Memory (CRMH) has denounced the operation as “expolio,” accusing the State and the Xunta de Galicia of complicity and passivity. The Xunta and the council of Sada have called for negotiations on the future management of the estate.
