Spain Franco-era estate restitution

Overview

In late July 2026 Spanish courts confirmed that the Pazo de Meirás estate in Galicia belongs to the State, overturning the Franco family's claim to the property. Following the First Instance Court order, the registry was updated to list the palace and its 15 farms under state ownership, and public visits were suspended while more than 400 pieces of furniture and decorative objects were removed by a transport firm. The Commission for the Recovery of Historical Memory denounced the removal as an "expolio" and called for negotiations on the estate’s future management.

Two days later, the city of Santiago de Compostela announced the permanent installation of two medieval statues, attributed to Mestre Mateo, in the new wing of the Museo do Pobo Galego. The statues, held by the Franco family for seven decades, were returned after a Supreme Court ruling affirmed municipal title. The actions at both the museum and the Meirás palace are presented as part of a broader effort by the Ministry of Democratic Memory to recover assets seized during the Franco dictatorship and place them in public institutions.
