Spain rehousing residents after building collapses in Barcelona and Benetússer
In Barcelona's Putxet neighbourhood, a sinkhole caused by L9 tunnel works forced the evacuation of eight buildings. On Monday, residents of two blocks and the restaurant Sant Gervasi were allowed to return after municipal technicians certified the premises habitable. The restaurateur Miquel Santamarta said, "Now it's time to clean, arrange and start again," as crews begin clearing debris and checking food supplies.
In the town of Benetússer, a three‑storey building collapsed on Tuesday, leaving dozens of families displaced. The regional government (EVHA) has handed over two public apartments to families who lost their homes, while the municipal council placed other victims in a hotel in Alcàsser. Authorities are investigating the collapse, which may be linked to nearby excavation work for a new housing development.
Both incidents have prompted local authorities to provide temporary shelter, accelerate technical inspections, and initiate longer‑term rehousing solutions for the affected residents.
