Spain economic outlook: BBVA raises GDP forecast amid structural challenges

Spain's economic landscape is seeing a mix of growth forecasts and structural challenges. BBVA Research has raised its 2026 GDP growth forecast to 2.6%, up from 2.4%, though it warns of risks from energy costs and interest rates. Despite this, the government has moved to reinstate the 'Financia Europa' savings and investment account, allowing individuals to invest up to 150,000 euros in European assets with tax advantages.

However, internal challenges persist. A report by the University of Navarra's Purpose Strength Project highlights a gap between economic growth and employee engagement, noting that only 10% of Spanish workers feel committed to their jobs. Economists also point to a need for reforms to address lagging productivity and purchasing power.

On the political front, Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo has indicated he is open to running for the PSOE in the upcoming elections as an independent if requested by Pedro Sánchez. Cuerpo, who has gained prominence within the government, recently shared personal reflections on his childhood emigration to Switzerland.
