Spain rejects Moroccan sovereignty claims over Ceuta and Melilla
Spanish officials have rejected Moroccan claims regarding the sovereignty of the North African enclaves Ceuta and Melilla. The dispute intensified after Moroccan Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi stated that the status of these territories remains an issue to be resolved through dialogue.
Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles responded by asserting that the cities are “super-Spanish” and that any aggression against them constitutes an attack on Spain as a whole. The Spanish Foreign Ministry added that the country's territorial integrity is not subject to discussion. This diplomatic tension follows a major border crisis in late July, during which an estimated 72,000 migrants attempted to enter Ceuta, resulting in at least 96 deaths.
While the Spanish government has praised Moroccan cooperation in repatriating migrants, attributing the crisis to people-smuggling mafias, the humanitarian situation in Ceuta remains critical. Thousands of migrants are currently without stable housing, with many sleeping on beaches or in open spaces. Meanwhile, Morocco has increased security near the borders following social media calls for another mass crossing attempt scheduled for August 15.
