Spain rejects Morocco's claims to Ceuta and Melilla
Moroccan Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi has renewed claims to the Spanish autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, asserting that Morocco holds historical and geographical rights over the territories. During an interview with the public broadcaster 2M, Ouahbi proposed the establishment of a bilateral dialogue mechanism to seek a “definitive solution” regarding the future of the enclaves, which would ultimately lead to their integration into Morocco.
The Spanish government, led by Pedro Sánchez, has issued a categorical rejection of these claims. The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that Ceuta and Melilla are integral parts of Spain's sovereign territory and, by extension, the territory of the European Union.
These diplomatic tensions arise during an ongoing migration crisis in Ceuta. At the end of July, tens of thousands of people attempted to cross the border from Morocco, overwhelming the city's capacity and resulting in numerous fatalities. Morocco has maintained its territorial aspirations for these cities since gaining independence in 1956.
