Spain reports 295,720 hectares burned by forest fires this year

Spain has recorded over 295,720 hectares burned by forest fires so far this year, accounting for 45% of all wildfire damage within the European Union. According to data from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), 43 major fires have been registered between January 1 and August 20.

Sara Aagesen, the Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, expressed gratitude to the firefighters, medical personnel, security forces, and scientists involved in the containment efforts. Despite forecasts for improved weather conditions, Aagesen urged the public to maintain maximum prudence and responsibility, noting that the region remains in a high-risk period for wildfires.

Experts warn that forest fires and extreme heat pose significant risks to air quality. These factors may counteract international efforts to reduce pollution from vehicles, industry, and heating systems by increasing exposure to harmful microparticles.
