Spain reports new animal disease outbreaks in Catalonia and Galicia

The Generalitat de Cataluña has reported four new cases of African swine fever (PPA) in wild boar, bringing the total number of reported foci to 64 and 372 positive animals across 13 municipalities. The cases involve three dead boars and one captured animal. Authorities are intensifying carcass searches, reinforcing perimeter fencing, using capture traps, and increasing biosecurity measures on pig farms, noting that the disease is not zoonotic.

In Galicia, the Regional Ministry of Rural Environment announced a new focus of bluetongue virus serotype 8 in cattle at a farm in Meira, Lugo. Earlier in July, other farms in Narón (A Coruña) and locations in A Baña and Brión had confirmed serotype 8 and serotype 3 infections, the first such cases in Spain for 2026. The regional government urges voluntary vaccination of cattle and sheep, emphasizing that the disease does not affect humans and is transmitted only by biting insects.

Both regions continue surveillance and control programs to limit the spread of these animal diseases.
