Spain requires €12 billion to meet 2035 EU recycling targets
The association Circularis, which includes major operators such as Urbaser, FCC, PreZero, and Valoriza, has stated that Spain requires an investment of 12 billion euros to modernize its recycling infrastructure. This capital is necessary to meet European Union objectives set for 2035, which include recycling at least 65% of municipal waste and reducing landfill use to below 10%.
Ricardo López de Haro, president of Circularis, emphasized that current efforts are insufficient to meet these mandates. The association’s proposed strategy focuses on three pillars: improving source separation to ensure effective recycling, deploying technology to convert materials back into the production circuit, and utilizing energy recovery for non-recyclable fractions to avoid landfilling.
