Spain restores Vigo as MIR exam centre, adds 35 residency slots in Galicia

Spain's Ministry of Health confirmed that the city of Vigo will again host the national MIR (Médico Interno Residente) exam next year, reversing a 2025 decision to move the venue. Minister Mónica García announced the change in a letter to Mayor Abel Caballero, who praised the decision and accused the regional health council of obstructing the city's role.

In the same announcement, the ministry accredited 35 new MIR residency places for Galicia for the 2026‑27 cycle, including 24 positions in a newly created Emergency and Urgencies specialty. The total Galician offering rises to 725 slots, a 6.3% increase over the previous year, with additional new posts across several hospitals in Orense, Pontevedra, A Coruña, Ferrol and Vigo.
