Spain retirement pension: Key application deadlines and requirements
In Spain, the timing of retirement pension applications is critical to avoiding financial losses. While workers can apply within three months before or after their cessation of work to ensure economic effects align with their retirement date, delaying the process beyond this window can limit the retroactivity of payments.
Planning for retirement requires more than just reaching the legal age. According to Social Security official Alfonso Muñoz, individuals must consider their total accumulated contributions. If a worker has contributed for at least 38.5 years, the retirement age is set at 65; otherwise, it rises to 67.
There are two main types of early retirement: voluntary, which requires at least 35 years of contributions, and involuntary, which applies when employment is lost due to circumstances beyond the worker's control and requires a minimum of 33 years of contributions. Factors such as bonuses for children or specific assimilated periods can also influence the final calculation.
