Spain retirement regulations: early retirement options and subsidies

Spain's Social Security system offers various pathways for early retirement, each with specific requirements and financial implications. For 2026, voluntary early retirement allows individuals to retire at age 63 if they have at least 38 years and 3 months of contributions. Those with fewer contributions may retire earlier but face permanent pension reductions ranging from 2.81% to 21%.

Involuntary early retirement, triggered by circumstances such as collective dismissals, allows for retirement from age 61 with a minimum of 33 years of contributions, typically resulting in less severe pension cuts than voluntary options.

Additionally, the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) provides a subsidy for workers over 52 who lose their jobs. While the monthly payment is approximately 480 euros, the SEPE calculates social security contributions based on 125% of the minimum contribution base, which can benefit future pension calculations.

Furthermore, approximately 50,000 workers with disabilities (45% or higher degree) may access early retirement at age 56 without pension reductions, provided they have 15 years of contributions. Recent updates have expanded this eligibility to include several new neurodegenerative pathologies.
