Spain road fatalities rise during summer 2026
Spain experienced a rise in road fatalities during the summer of 2026, according to data from the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT). Across the country, 240 people died in 218 fatal accidents during July and August, representing a 4% increase in deaths compared to the same period in 2025.
Regional data shows significant variations in mortality. The Valencian Community recorded the largest increase in fatalities in Spain, with 25 deaths in July and August, nearly doubling the 13 deaths reported in 2025. In Castilla y León, 34 people died on the roads, a 6% increase from the previous year. Within that region, León saw the highest number of fatalities with nine deaths, while Soria saw a significant spike, tripling its 2025 figure to three deaths.
In Palencia, the summer period saw 371 accidents resulting in five deaths and 62 injuries. One notable incident involved the death of four family members on the A-67 highway in early July. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska characterized the period as 'a bad summer,' noting that an average of four people died on Spanish roads every day.
