Spain sees eviction drop in Q1 2026 as Barcelona unveils €3 million housing rehab grants

Evictions for unpaid rent or mortgage fell 45.4% in the first quarter of 2026 across Spain, with a total of 4,005 cases recorded by the General Council of the Judiciary. The majority were rent‑related evictions, which accounted for 64.9% of the total and dropped 53.9% compared with the same period in 2025. Catalonia contributed the most to the national total, registering 921 evictions (23% of Spain’s total) and leading in mortgage executions with 217 cases.

The Barcelona Housing Consortium announced a multi‑year call for subsidies to renovate interior spaces of private homes for inclusion in the city’s Rental Housing Exchange. The programme budgets €3 million (€1.2 million for 2026 and €1.8 million for 2027) and will cover up to 100% of eligible costs, capped at €30,000 per dwelling. Applications are open from 12 February to 30 November 2026, with works required to be completed by 30 October 2027.
