Spain sees gasoline price jump of over 6% after ending fuel subsidies

Following the government’s decision to end special fuel aid, the price of gasoline in Spain rose by more than 6% in a single week, while diesel prices increased by about 1.70 €/tank. The lift in the VAT to the standard 21% and the removal of a 15‑cent‑per‑liter subsidy were cited by officials as the drivers of the increase. Drivers are turning to low‑cost stations as “refuges” to mitigate the higher costs.

The change affected a typical 55‑litre tank, now costing roughly five euros more than before the measures took effect. The Spanish government’s Council of Ministers had previously defended the modest price cut, but the new policy has already been felt in households across the country.
