Spain sees rising interest in rural living due to urban housing costs

Changing residential preferences in Spain indicate a potential shift toward rural living, driven largely by high urban housing costs. According to research from Fotocasa, 60% of Spaniards express an interest in living in a village, a trend most pronounced among those aged 18 to 44 and residents of Madrid.

Specifically, 23% of individuals under the age of 25 plan to move to municipalities with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants. While 13% of housing seekers anticipate making this move in the coming months, the success of this demographic shift depends on improvements in employment, connectivity, services, and infrastructure. Some movers intend to maintain their current roles via teleworking, while 9% plan to change jobs to facilitate the relocation.

Popularity among rural destinations is often tied to accessibility, historical charm, and ease of tourism. Chinchón, located near Madrid, is highlighted as a premier example of a popular village due to its proximity to the capital and established gastronomic scene. However, despite rising interest, Spain's rural population remains relatively low at 14% compared to other EU nations.
