Spain’s regulated electricity price surges on July 27, 2026
On Monday 27 July 2026 the price of electricity under Spain’s regulated PVPC tariff jumped sharply, with the average market price reaching 98.02 €/MWh – an increase of about 41 % from the previous day. Hour‑by‑hour data show extreme volatility: the cheapest hour, between 11:00 and 12:00, recorded a price of 0 €/MWh, while the peak hour from 21:00 to 22:00 surged to 388.86 €/MWh, creating a spread of more than 232 €/MWh between the lowest and highest rates.
The annual cost estimate for a typical household rose to €924.60, a 27.9 % rise over April levels, pushing the average yearly bill close to €1,000. The surge is linked to higher gas prices, increased system‑wide costs and the recent heat wave that lifted wholesale electricity prices. Competitive offers in the free‑market, such as those from Visalia, promise savings of roughly €128 per year compared with the regulated tariff.
During daylight hours many slots showed prices at or near zero, even negative in some regions, offering an opportunity for consumers to shift appliance use to these cheaper periods. By contrast, night‑time and early‑morning slots regularly exceeded €100 €/MWh, emphasizing the importance of timing consumption to manage bills.
